Montecristo is, after Cohiba, the most purchased and well-known brand of Habanos. These cuban cigars are loved by both experienced smokers and beginners alike, and are produced and hand-rolled in the Jose Marti factory as well as in El Laguito.
Montecristo was founded by Spanish aristocrat Alonso Menendez in 1935. The name Montecristo comes form the famous novel „The Count of Monte Cristo“ by French author Alexandre Dumas. The story was among the favorite read to the Torcedores as they rolled the soon to be famous cigars.
Only the best, most carefully aged tobacco is used to produce Montecristo's cigars. All Montecristos are made by hand with full leaves and are 100% long-filler; totalemente a mano – Tripa larga. The well balanced cigars employ the finest tobacco leaves harvested from the Vuelta Abajo region in Cuba's south west region.
Montecristo cigars are full-bodied and have a pronounced taste. Strong aromas such as cacao, coffee and vanilla dominate in combination with medium strength tobacco flavor with light notes of fruit.
Having originally established their portfolio with a numbered cigars from No.1 to No.5, Montecristo widened their offering with the fuller-bodied Edmundo in 2004, which has a slightly stronger aroma and a 52 guage. Based on the success of the Edmundo, the Montecristo Petit- and Double Edmundos were released in 2006 adding a shorter and longer smoke to the series respectively.
The Montecristo Open series, aimed at consumers looking for milder smoking options, has been available in Germany since 2009 in four different formats. These cigars have an extra, green-colored ring with a name of each cigar.
A classic and my favorite Montecristo is the Montecristo No. 2, a Torpedo format that, in 2013, was voted „Cigar of the Year“ by Cigar Afficionado Magazine.
